New York City is known for its nightlife and the relative higher cost of everything from a penthouse apartment to a dirty water hotdog (don't ask!). These are not mutually exclusive though, you can get the good life without the high cost!

New York City bar experience

New York has a whole lot more to offer than what you've seen on TV and in the movies. A lot of these "famous" places charge more just because that's what its out-of-town customers expect, and, hey, why should they not get rich off of higher expectations?

If you stay off the beaten path you can find restaurants and bars that the regular non-Wall Street and A-List celebrity segment of New York. Everyone has heard of Broadway, but check out Third Avenue!

The area of Third Avenue around the East Village is renown for its bar scene. Stick around between 14th Street and Houston Street, with your best bet being Saint Mark's Place. Don't be afraid to head further east, to 2nd and 1st Avenues, and then into Alphabet City (so-named because the avenues are named A, B, C and D). Further south is the Lower East Side.

A lot of fun and good deals can be found here in these vibrant and young areas of the city.

Advice for bars in New York City

You don't need the glitz and glamour of flashy midtown to enjoy an adult beverage in your hometown, so why pay a premium for it on your trip to New York? Ask a local, or take the subway and get off at the next stop. The city has a disproportionately low crime-rate, and during the daytime you have nothing to worry about (or the night for that matter), it's a far cry from the 1980s!

Don't put full faith in taking your hotel concierge's advice. There may be a quid pro quo or kickback system in place, better to get some honest feedback. Even if it's a total dive, that's part of the experience!

Look for experiences in other boroughs too. Bars in Brooklyn are frequent fun fare, and often cheaper than those across the East River in Manhattan. Williamsburg is all the rage lately, and any stop on the L train is replete with folks out for a good time. No flashy neon lights are needed, if a shot and a beer for $5 are what you look for in a good deal and a good time.
