A day out in Alnwick Northumbria visiting Alnwick Castle which was featured as Hogwarts in Harry Potter film. This also describes what to see and do in Alnwick Castle.

Getting to Alnwick

One early June morning, dark clouds enveloped the city of Newcastle Upon Tyne and scattered rain showers, I headed to the city's bus terminal and inquired which bus I need to take that would bring me to Alnwick. I got in the bus and requested the bus driver to signal me to get off at Alnwick. The weather did not get any better, there were areas with heavy rains, there were areas with rain showers, I was secretly hoping that the Mr. Sunshine would somehow show up through the the dark thick clouds above when I reach Alnwick.

Finally I reach my destination, I get off the bus and there was only drizzle.

Alnwick is a town in the heart of Northumberland. I found the town charming with its old buildings and structures that always impressed me in some countries I visited. My main purpose in coming was to visit Alnwick Castle which was featured as Hogwarts in Harry Potter film.

Finding Alnwick Castle

I walked a few hundred yards enjoying the old buildings around. There are signage along the road pointing direction to Alnwick Castle. I also inquired to people I met along the road to verify that I am on the right track. At last, I found Alnwick Castle entrance. I paid the entrance fee and went inside.

The Dragon Quest

Inside the castle compound are some attractions for kids to get busy with like the Knight Quest and the Dragon Quest. They could dress up and play like knight and princess and the dragon quest is where they could portray a brave swordsman in search for the dragon to slay him. This took my interest and entered inside where one find horrible creatures and kids would really get scared and thrilled.

Inside the Castle

I have visited several castles in Germany especially that of King Ludwig in Bavaria, some in the north and the famous Sans Souci in Potsdam, but I was very surprised to find out that Alnwick Castle is inhabited by the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland and yet they allow the public to view this beautiful and historical castle.

The inside of the castle was really impressive, the interior design, the furniture, the art collections and paintings, the china wares, everything was well preserved. I went through each of the rooms like the drawing room, the salon and the library. There was a wide array of books in the bookshelves and wondering how many years it will take to finish reading all of them. I was very impressed with the dining room where one could find a long dining table which is an elegant piece of furniture and imagined in the old days, how many servants they employed to serve the diners. The design of the fireplace was also magnificent that it did not escape my attention. Next to the dining room is another room where all the china wares are showcased. I couldn't imagine how many centuries old these items are and how does it feel to dine on these gorgeous and beautiful porcelains.

Unfortunately cameras are not allowed inside hence I have nothing to post in this section.

The Castle Grounds

After viewing the inside of the castle, I took the opportunity to walk around the castle ground. Within the ground one could find the courtyard cafe and the sanctuary where weddings can be arranged.

The ground was so vast and I also found some museums in another building housing some armories and other memorabilia.

Luckily, the sunshine and the blue sky came out, hence I was able to get nice photo outside the castle.

Unrelated but my wife once painted a picture of an Arabian horse named Muscat, I see you live in Muscat.

Anyhow this is a terrific guide on Anlwick Castle, the Castle from Harry Potter movies.
