Visit Crab Island now
If you’re looking for a cheap place to relax and isolate yourself from the hectic city life, head down to Pulau Ketam (Crab Island), which is located off the coast of Klang, Malaysia. This fishing village offers its very own unique tourism, attracting thousands of visitors each year. The island is easily accessible from the Port Klang jetty by ferry and in order to get on board, you need to get yourself a to and fro ticket. To get to the port from Kuala Lumpur, you can either drive or take the train (KTM); most tourists would travel from KL central to Port Klang. The journey will take about an hour if you travel from KL central. If you are going to spend a night in Pulau Ketam, it’s best to start your journey in the morning.
Many wonder about the history behind the village’s name, Pulau Ketam. Likewise, there is always a history behind everything. Pulau Ketam was once a desolated island, which was once full of mangrove swamps and crabs. Three Chinese from Hainan, China, arrived at the island to catch crabs for a living. They travelled from Port Klang to the swamps every day. However, they decided to build a small house in order to stay overnight as the journey from the port to the swamp would take the whole day, which is tiring indeed. They returned to Port Klang the day after to sell crabs and to buy daily sundries. In 1872, they built a temple named “Chuan Eng Bio”, and after that, they decided to settle down at the island and in the year 1883, the population increased and an established fishing village is what you can see today.
As you are about to reach the village, you will get to see the so called “floating houses”; these houses are the villagers’ houses and trust me, you probably be amazed of what you will see next. Yes, Pulau Ketam reflects the simple life of the fishing village people, with not much stress and air pollutions that you can find in the big cities. Although it is a small fishing village, do not underestimate this village because it has the necessities that most of us need such as shops, banks, hotels, restaurants, police stations, clinics, and many more. The best part about this place is their seafood. Many people come to the village to try its wonderful seafood, fresh from the sea! You’ll notice that the villagers actually cycle around the village; yes, this is because cars or heavy vehicles are prohibited from entering this village. You can rent a bicycle for just RM5/day and enjoy its “kampong” scenery.
There are Pulau Ketam tour packages that you can choose, especially when you are visiting the island with your family. If you wish to come for a one day visit, you can choose The Pulau Ketam’s Day Trip Package that includes Charter Wooden Ferry, a visit to Pulau Ketam’s Fish Farm, seafood lunch, and a guide by Pulau Ketam’s very own Local Tour Guide that shall take you around the village.
