Vancouver island is full of exciting things to do for adventure seekers, like bungee jumping, mountain biking. Another attraction is the lovely beaches and abundance of natural beauty. The tourists love the beautiful weather.

Vancouver Island

Vancouver Island is a large island in Pacific Ocean situated in southwest of BC. With an area of 32,134 sq. km it is the largest island on western side of North America and Canada’s11th largest island.

It is named after Captain George Vancouver of The Royal Navy who explored the region around 1790s. Many indigenous people have inhabited this island earlier. In the present times three classifications have been made on the basis of language and these three groups are the Kwakwaka’wakw, BriSNuu-chah-nulth and Coast Salish. The first British settlement was Hudson’s Bay Company post in 1843. This was renamed Fort Victoria and it was the base during the gold rush of 1858. Since then Victoria has been the capital of British Columbia.

Climate
Temperate type of climate makes the island very welcoming. The winter is drier and warmer than the mainland. The ocean currents make the climate very moderate more like California weather. The west coast gets more winds and is loved by the storm watchers. It can rain anytime so its advisable to carry an umbrella always. It can snow sometimes but it melts fast.Skiing and Golf can be done the same day.

Things to do
Vancouver Island has a rich heritage and it is very well preserved and kept alive in the various museums. The native culture, history and the coming of the Europeans – all historical evidence lies displayed in various museums across the island. There is a museum just displaying pioneer and island farming, as there is a one displaying maritime and whale exhibits. But the Royal British Columbia Museum is among the best ones in the world. If anyone wants historical tours one can go visit Craigdarroch Castle, Quwutsun’ Cultural Centre or Fisgard Lighthouse among others.

People who love outdoor adventure would love this place for its sport fishing, scuba diving. Skiing or whale watching. Canoeing is popular because there are numerous lakes and inlets on the island.Day trips can be planned to some lakes like Elk and Beaver lakes, Thetis Lake,Cowichan or Matheson Lake.

Bungee jumping, mountain biking, winter sports, cycling, camping – its all there. Scuba divers can have the best of opportunity here. Jacques Cousteau found this side of the Pacific among the best in the world for divers Snorkeling, surfing, boating, sailing and whale watching are extremely popular with the tourists here.

This place is a paradise for golf aficionados. There are around 50 golf courses and they are among the most beautiful ones in the world Some of them are right in the middle of forests or hilltops or besides a beach. They all have world class facility and the pleasant weather also makes the golfer love this place. Golf packages are available.

Parks
There are 150 parks but the most important one is Strathcona Provincial Park which attracts all the tourist. It offers kayaking, hiking trails, trekking, whale watching and camping. There are abundant recreational activities for everyone.
Vancouver Island offers enough natural beauty as well. There are beaches, beautiful plants, lots of birds and bears among other animals. Wildlife tours packages are also available.

Accommodation
Since Vancouver Island has so much to offer to people there is always huge rush of tourists in any season. There are many options for rental property for the vacations and the price range is varied and covers any kind of budget. There are hotels, motels, inns, resorts, lodges, B&B, cottages, cabins, fishing lodge, skiing lodge, vacation homes or condos.

Nightlife, pubs and bars
There is a very modern nightclub in Victoria where patrons can dance the whole night.
Many bars, pubs, grills, sports lounge and inns are there in Victoria. Fine dining as well casual seaside fare is easily available. There is also a micro brewery.

Transportation
BC Ferries are very important for connecting the mainland to all the islands. Victoria and Nanajmo are the ports for the ferry call and the journey can take 90 min to 2 hours.
The Washington State Ferry ferries from Seattle and San Juan Islands.

Planes fly to Victoria International Airport from Seattle and Vancouver. This is Victorias largest airport. Nanaimo Airport also receives planes from Vancouver. Of course if you are going to an island you can even fly by seaplane or floatplane, which can take you to any remote lake.

Property
The island is economically very vibrant. It is big and is well populated. There is lot of property going for rental and sales. The options are varied – a seaside villa or a green eco friendly home, or a heritage property for sale. Many tourists build their own holiday homes instead of renting every year.

In short. Vancouver Island is many things rolled into one. It gives the feel of an island but is like a big city. It offers the best in outdoor recreational activities as well as excellent pubs and bars. It can suit the history buff as it would a sports man.
