Travel Guide: Top 5 Things You Should Do in New Delhi, India

Travel Guide: Top 5 Things to Do in New Delhi, India

Throughout my travel and studies on world geography and history, I have either been to or researched on thousands of cities throughout the world. One of the most fascinating is New Delhi, India. New Delhi, the capital city of India, is in fact a modern metropolis built to accommodate the nation's growth as one of the world's largest democracies. New Delhi has actually grown around old Delhi, the original seat of power of the mighty Mughal kings who ruled majority of modern India for several centuries. If you are touring New Delhi, here are places you need to see and things you should do:

Begin with a visit to Old Delhi
Old Delhi was the seat of power for so many centuries that there is a lot of Islamic influence here. Religious practices and mosques (or Jamma Masjid as they are called) are the hallmark of Old Delhi. The old city is a network of small narrow lanes. These lanes are lined by shops at the lower levels with the owners living above. These shops sell everything in the world: from bangles to the best street food.

Taste street food
Old Delhi boasts of a royal cuisine (or in the local dialect Nawabi style of cooking). This means that the food has a certain royal practice of cooking food that is distinctive from other parts of the country and the city itself. In fact there is a lane called 'Indian Bread Street' (Gali paranthe Wali) that is a commercial hub by day and by night converts into a street full of shops selling spicy, tangy street food for all.

Chandni Chowk
Chandni Chowk is the centre of all the activity. By late evening this center get so crowded that there is hardly any place to take a good photo.

Frashkhana is the place to visit if you are great fan of nutty delights.

A highly recommended place for lunch is at the Khan Hotel, a simple Old Delhi eatery, located by the Mughal archway. No spices but good home cooked food.

If you do travel to New Delhi, great food is a major attraction-as it should be. Experience as much as possible with the vast cuisines offered in New Delhi.
