The Silk Road is one of the most famous trade routes in the world. Stretching from Cheng’du in the east of China to the Mediterranean in the west, it has become an icon for east and central Asia.

In more recent years, travelling the Silk Road and the footsteps of the ancient merchants and traders has become a popular tourist destination. There are many different routes you can but the Sichuan - Tibet HWY (Northern Route) is one that leads you through some interesting places.

The Sichuan - Tibet HWY (Northern Route) is the least travelled route and there is a very good reason for this; the terrain. This route crosses the Chola Mountain, the highest points on this side of Tibet. Not only this, the roads are in desperate need of repair and will test your skill and nerves.

However, the places you pass makes up for this battle of the nerves.

Start at the Tagong Grasslands, found 110km northwest of Kangding in Sichuan. Start with relaxing here for a few days; the scenery is amazing and if you come at the right time, there are festivals that occur. You can also take in a Tibetan opera performance.
In Tagong you will definitely get a feel of Tibet and the Tibetan culture. Tagong Templeis a mixture of Chinese and Tibetan architecture, dating back to the Tang Dynasty. The village itself is very pretty.

Danba has a population of 58,000 and stretched across the Dadu River valley and seems as though it has been carved out of the riverine. The village itself is a little away from here and the surrounding villages are a mixture of ethnic groups, mostly Tibetan and Qiang.

In this area, you can explore the little villages and admire the many ancient watchtowers that guard the area straight from the past.

There are many villages to explore, two of the best being Zhong Lu Zangzhai Diaoqun Guiychi and Jiaju Zangzhai. Taxis can take you to these and they are very cheap to do so. Otherwise, you can hike to them yourselves. The best time to do this is during the autumn when the landscape bursts into a glory of colours making it a place that will take your breath away.

Ganzi is a bustling little town on the way surrounded by the Chola Mountains, making a truly beautiful place. This is home to a large population of Tibetans and Khambas. There are several monasteries and Tibetan villages that can be explored in a few days.
There are many more places and sights on the Sichuan - Tibet HWY (Northern Route). The Silk Road is waiting for you.
