Janakpur is an ancient town in southern Nepal. Inspired by native Mithila culture, the city of Janakpur boasts places of religious places including the Janaki Mandir, Biwahamandap and lots of sacred ponds.

Janakpur is the biggest temple city of Nepal

I guess many Nepali don't know what the largest temple in Nepal is. If I ask someone, the first answer would definitely be Nyatpola or five-storeyed temple of Bhaktapur. It's not the largest but the tallest. The biggest temple is the native to the most spoken laguage of Nepal - the Maithili language. And yes, you now guessed it right- the famous Ram Janaki Temple of Janakpur.

Janakpur has always been a site for pilgrimage and also of great economic interest. It is situated in the central southern Nepal in the Janakpur zone. It is famous in South Asia for god Ram and goddess Sita. Goddess Sita was daughter of king Janak, the king of Janakpur. This is why Janakpur is of great mythological interest and this ancient city dates to million years ago.

How to get to Janakpur

Janakpur is a town located in eastern-central part of the southern Nepal in Dhanusha District of the Janakpur Zone. Janakpur is accessible from Kathmandu by a direct bus and also by a short 20 minutes flight.

Holy Temples - Janaki Temple, Ram Mandir

The main attractions of this ancient city are the Ram-Janaki temple which is the biggest of Nepal and only railway service in Nepal. We can also see the Biwahamandap of Ram and Sita. Janakpur is also famous for holy ponds and it has many big temples. Personallly, I visited about 10 big temples.

Typical Madhesi Foods

What I found more attracting was typical delicious Madhesi foods and their rituals and culture. Though it is rich in culture, it is of great economic importance too. Janakpur has the highest inward remittance flow in Nepal and the important Janakpur Cigarrete Industries also lies here. Though it is an industrious town, the industries are located far away from city centre and its usually peaceful in the city. Find more about tourist places in Nepal.
