Italy is a great country to visit. Italian art and architecture are some of Europe's finest, and there are some great cities in Italy. Here are the top five places to visit in Italy.


To begin with the historic city of Rome which is one of Italy's most notable destinations. Rome is the capital of Italy, and a city that has many famous monuments. One of the most notable is the Colosseum. The ruins of this Colosseum is perhaps Romes most famous landmark, and it is fantastic Italian architecture. The Pantheon is another great monument in Rome. This temple is one of Italy's finest buildings and another of Rome's highlights. Aside from this, Rome has many fascinating museums and galleries such as the Galleria Borghese.

The Vatican City

The home of the Roman Catholic Church, the Vatican City, is a sovereign city-state in Rome. As such, it is visited by millions of Christians, especially during Christian holidays such as Easter. The Vatican has Europe's most famous cathedral the St. Peter's Basilica, which is the worlds largest Christian church. Vatican City also has some interesting Vatican Museums including the renaissance Sistine Chapel.


Beyond Rome are the canals and gondolas of the city of Venice. Venice is a unique city surrounded by water, and visitors can travel by gondolas along the Grand Canal. Venice also has many fine art collections displaying Renaissance art such as at the Accademia. Many of Venice's landmarks are at St Mark's Square such as the Bell Tower and Clock Tower which dominates the Venice skyline. Lido Island is sea-side resort area which is also a good place to visit in Venice. It has a few beaches and the only golf course in the city.


In the south of Italy there is the island of Sicily which has some lush landscapes, dramatic coastline, and Europe's tallest active volcano Mount Etna. This is a great European island for a vacation. Sicily has many great museums such as the Regional Archaeological Museum and Paolo Orsi Regional Archaeological Museum which have some of the most extensive collections in Italy. The island also has some impressive beaches such as the Spiaggia dei Conigli, Lampedusa (Ag) and the San Vito lo Capo beach.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa

One of Italy's most famous landmarks is that of the leaning Tower of Pisa. This 186 ft tower has fascinated tourists for its sloped angle. The tower is a UNESCO heritage site, and since renovation work has now be reopened to the public. Alongside the Leaning Tower of Pisa there is also the Pisa Cathedral and cathedral museum.
