This article is about my trip to Las Vegas. It talks about the best places to stay, dine and what to explore.

The magic of Las Vegas

Drew Carey the well known American actor and comedian famously said “Nevada’s one of the most conservative states in the union but you can do what you want in Vegas and nobody judges you”. I guess, each visitor goes with an agenda of his own and gets exactly what he or she is looking for. Since all I wanted was an innocent good time, that’s what I received. In my mind, thus, forever, the Bellagio and Vegas will remain inextricably linked. In ordinary circumstances, people would think twice before booking a room at this grand hotel, but I guess, a special occasion like a Birthday or anniversary is well worth the splurge.
Las Vegas, translated into English is nothing but “the meadow”. The rich soil and the bountiful supply of underground water give Vegas its name. Though, far from being a placid meadow, the city stands tall as the glamorous, cultural hub of Nevada .As far as the famed underground springs of water, they surely do find expression in the fountains of Bellagio. The hotel which opened in 1998 remains a popular tourist destination. With its magnificent lobby ceiling of hand blown glass flowers ,a lush and colorful green house where it’s forever spring, an eight acre lake between its premises and the strip, a dancing fountain ,the Bellagio makes sure that you have a lot to do even without stepping out of the hotel. They don’t charge you nearly four hundred dollars a room, for nothing. Well, at least you get to take the room key (card) home, so that you can simply moon over the wonderful memories.
While in Vegas and that too at the Bellagio, it’s wise to get tickets for the Cirque du soleil’s show ‘O’.A fabulous and eclectic mix of music, dance and acrobatics. We managed to get good seats but to our great embarrassment kept falling asleep, midway through the show. The jetlag, the day’s activities took its toll. If you cram too many things in one day, out of the sheer excitement of being in the midst of all the action, you just can’t enjoy it all. We ran into several people who experienced something similar. In Vegas, it’s good to take things slow, provided you have a longer vacation. But there are just too many glitzy attractions. The Venetian, the Mirage, Caesar’s palace, Cosmopolitan , Aria, .Where would you like to try your luck? These are all hotel cum casinos with the occasional mall thrown in .Each surpassing the other in sheer gorgeousness.
People like us who are forever looking for a sale will do better to better stay away from the malls which house all the high end brands of the world. It’s better to get a fridge magnet or two, and enjoy a Gondola ride at the Venetian which comes complete with a singing boat man. For a few minutes you will feel like a star as people click pictures or simply stare at the spectacle. More so if you take the ride indoors away from the sun, which we most certainly did. Another fun idea is to visit Siegfried and Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat, the zoo attached to the Mirage resort .A good way to spend the day in a cool shady environment away from the din of the casinos and the heat. Temperatures during summer can rise well up to forty degrees and more. Load up on the sunscreen and lots of water.
Las Vegas is known for creating most of the famous structures in the world. The Pyramids, the Sphinx, The Statue of Liberty, The Eiffel Tower, you name it, they have it right here. My Birthday dinner on top of the Eiffel tower at the Paris hotel ensured that I won’t be asking for a trip to Paris for a long time. If you ignore the food which is exorbitantly priced (read very small portions), you can enjoy the view and the feeling of being on the top of the world. My visit to Vegas concluded with ‘Ka’, another Cirque du soleil performance, a music and action packed extravaganza .A beautiful production, it remains my favorite till date.
With a heavy heart I bid goodbye to ‘sin city’ .I didn’t hit the jackpot in any of the casinos but as far as experience is concerned, I most certainly did.
