Pinawela.

The Pinawela elephant orphanage was established in 1975 to help the orphan elephants which require protection.

Entrance.

The entrance of the Pinawela elephant orphanage is fascinating. The rock contains engravings of elephants.

1975.

The orphanage was established in 1975. A great job had been done by the Sri Lankan Department of Wildlife Convervation to protect the elephants.

Orphans.

The nursery or the orphanage is created in such a way that the elephants can spend their time over there with human care.

Wilpattu.

Initially the Elephant orphanage was established in the Wilpattu National Park. From there they were transferred to Bentota.

Bentota to Zoo Site.

From Bentota in the sea-side the orphanage site was transferred to Dehiwala Zoo. But in 1975, Pinawela became the permanent place for breeding of orphan elephants.

Gentle water.

The water in the river in the Pinewale orphanage is gentle. The elephants enjoy the bath everyday during afternoon.

Milk.

Milk is provided by the authorities to the baby elephants. Food is provided. They are given human care including bathing assistance.

Huge area.

The entire orphanage is situated around huge area. So the elephants can get natural habitat of forests and jungles.

River.

The river where the elephants are taken to have a bath have pleasant water and the elephants enjoy the bath during afternoon.

Many elephants

More than 60 to 70 elephants come together to have bath in the afternoon in the Pinawela Elephant Orphanage.

Afternoon.

Afternoon is the best time of the day to visit the orphanage. The elephants after having their meals come for swimming.

Milk.

Generally milk is provided in feeding bottles for the baby elephants. They come and have the milk when they are provided.

Visitors.

If visitors want to feed the elephants with milk they are allowed to do the same. But there are supposed to pay an amount for doing so.

Tickets.

The ticket fares are very high in the orphanage. Tourists are supposed to pay more than Rs 750 Sri lankan currency each to enter the orphanage.
