Sarah Lockwood Pardee was born in Connecticut in 1840 to Leonard Pardee and Sarah Burns. She was raised high society, being educated in the best schools. She spoke four languages and played the piano. She was the "Belle of New Haven."

Sarah married William Wirt Winchester in 1862, the son of the Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut Oliver Fisher Winchester and the manufacturer of the Winchester repeating rifle.

The couple's infant daughter Annie died in 1866 from Marasmus, a childhood disease.
Mrs. Winchester fell into a deep depression and never recovered.

Her husband died in March 1881, from Tuberculosis. causing Mrs. Winchester to look for help from a Boston spiritualist.

The spiritualist said her family and fortune were haunted by the victims of the Winchester rifle. Specifically the ghosts of Civil War soldiers, Indians and others murdered by the rifle. And that Mrs. Winchester was the next victim!

To appease the spirits, Mrs. Winchester was to move West and build a great house for them and never stop construction. As long as the house remained unfinished, she would be safe and even give her eternal life!

Mrs. Winchester moved to California. She stayed with a relative in Menlo Park. In 1884, she bought a farm three miles East of San Jose. Construction began and continues for thirty eight years!

Mrs. Winchester property eventually grew to 161 acres planted with Apricots, Walnuts and plums. She owned homes in Atherton, Los Altos and Palo Alto.

She inherited cash and 777 shares of stock in the Winchester Repeating Arms Company from her husband. When her Mother in law died in 1897, Mrs. Winchester inherited 200 shares of stock, giving her almost a majority interest. Her monthly income was $1000 a day.

Mrs. Winchester had Arthiritis.
