Explore some of the world’s most luxurious train journeys.

The Top Train Journeys

Few modes of travel can match the elegance and charm of an extended rail journey. Rail journeys offer travelers the opportunity to traverse some of the world’s most beautiful wilderness areas in perfect comfort and at a gentle pace – providing ample time to soak in the scenery and simply relax.

Here are 10 of the world’s most popular trains and rail journeys:

The Maharaja Express

The Maharaja Express is India’s foremost luxury train. The train travels on a variety of itineraries, ranging from 7 night trips from Mumbai to Delhi, to 3 night tours to Agra and Jaipur. The train’s cabins are the last word in luxury, with LCD TVs, eco-friendly toilets and climate control.

Trans-Siberian Express

The Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express is the ultimate way to explore the vast expanses of Russia, travelling along the iconic Moscow – Vladivostok line, one of the world’s longest rail journeys. The train boasts sumptuous cabins, two dining cars and a lounge car.

Pride of Africa

The Pride of Africa evokes the mystique of colonial Africa, travelling through vast stretches of unspoiled African wilderness on its route from South Africa in the south to Tanzania on the African East Coast. With wood-panelled cabins, en-suit bathrooms and sterling service it is billed as the world’s most luxurious train.

The Blue Train

Another African train could easily contest this claim. Refurbished and re-launched in 1997, the Blue Train travels between Pretoria and Cape Town, and offers its passengers sound-proofed cabins, en-suite bathrooms (with bathtubs) and an observation car.

The Rocky Mountaineer

The Rocky Mountaineer is the premier option for travelling Canada’s scenic, mountainous western interior and coast. This luxury train operates on three routes, and is best known for its distinctive glass dome coaches which offer unrivalled views over the passing scenery.

The Canadian

The Canadian is another luxury option for exploring North America by rail, with this train travelling between Toronto and Vancouver three times a week. The train offers different classes, with the luxury class including a private bedroom, wine tastings and five star meal service.

The Orient Express

The Orient Express is the most recognizable name in luxury train journeys, offering guests the opportunity to travel several different European itineraries onboard restored vintage rail cars from the 1920s. The iconic route from Paris to Istanbul remains as one of the train’s popular itineraries.

Viewing the world from a luxury train is the experience of a lifetime. If you aren’t big on planning you can let an experienced tour operator recommend a train journey for you or your family, and take care of all booking and travel arrangements.

This was excellent. I've done a few long distance train rides in Europe, India and Africa, but never in this style - always bottom class.

Lovely images and unique. The cost is a bit high for the common folks - but that is why it is - once in a lifetime! siva

Trans-Siberian is perhaps the most famous but I really likes the Canadian and the Rocky Mountaineer. Great article and pictures!
