The Banaue Rice Terraces are terraces that were carved into the mountains of Ifugao in the northern island of Luzon in the Philippines more than 2000 years ago. It was carved by the ancestors of the indigenous people of Ifugao.

It is located 1500 meters (approximate) or 5000 feet above the sea level. It covers the area of 10,360 square kilometers or about 4000 square miles of the mountainside. The Filipinos commonly referred the terraces as the “Eight Wonders of the World. The terraces were built by minimal equipment. It was built largely made by hand.

These terraces are one of the UNESCO World heritage Site and are found in the provinces of Kalinga, Apayao, Benguet, Mountain Province and Ifugao.

Ancient irrigation system from the rain forest fed the terraces. The terraces steps, if put end to end was said to encircle half the globe. Until this day, local farmers still plant rice and other vegetables and crops on these terraces.
