While traveling through England, we were enchanged with The Lake District of this country. The gentle rolling hills and, of course, the lakes were a delight to the eyes.

The Lake District of England

While hitchhiking through Europe back in the early 1970's, we began our trip in England. We landed in Liverpool and then started our hitchhiking south to London. Eventually we came to The Lake District of England - a truly beautiful area in northwest England - not far from the Scottish border. This area has picture perfect views of what England should and does look like. The very narrow roads, high hedges on either side of the road, small villages that always have a wonderful pub where you can get a lunch or a lime and larger. The meat pies, of course, always on the menu.

The lakes are everywhere and each one more lovely than the next. Fishing reigns supreme in this area, as you can imagine. Fresh trout is a wonderful meal after walking and hiking in this district.

One morning, after spending the night at a youth hostel, I got up early and walked into the village. The vicar was working in his garden and we had a delightful conversation about the history of the area and his lovely little church. He was very proud of his church and took me inside for a tour.

I would highly recommend you visit this area and allow yourself enough time to enjoy nature - and England - as it is. I know you will enjoy it.
