This article is about my hometown in California and it's people.

The people of Campbell

The city of Campbell is located in the Santa Clara Valley, about 50 miles south of San Francisco. The city is surrounded by San Jose, Saratoga and Los Gatos. The population is 40,413 (2010 census) with a median age of 38.3. The price of an average family house is $790,611. The average income is $96,584. Campbell is known as the "Orchard City".

The History of Campbell

The first inhabitants were the Ohlone Indians, hunter-gatherers who live in the Santa Clara Valley. The Spanish founded Mission Santa Clara De Asis. and Pueblo San Jose De Guadalupe in 1777. The Indians worked and lived at the mission. planting wheat and raising cattle. Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821. The land in the valley was divided into ranchos. One of the ranchos was Rancho El Quito. A settler could receive 50,000 acres from the government if he became a catholic and a citizen of Mexico.

Gold was discovered in the American River at Sutter's mill in January 1848. California became a state on September 9, 1850.

Benjamin Campbell arrived in California in 1846. He bought 160 acres of grazing land in 1851. Campbell traveled back to Missouri to marry his fiancée Mary Louis Rucker. Campbell led a wagon train with 36 adults and children back To California.

Fruit orchards rose in the valley in the 1870's.

The Campbell's house was the first post office. Benjamin Campbell sold an acre of his land to the railroad in 1878 for $5. The Campbell station was built in 1886. The Campbell's subdivided their land in 1888 That land became Downtown Campbell.. Benjamin Campbell died in 1907 and he is buried at Mission City Memorial Park in Santa Clara.

The Bank of Campbell was founded in 1895, today known as the Farley Building.

Campbell farmers founded two cooperatives. In 1892, the Campbell Fruit Growers Union was founded in 1892. And by 1917, the other cooperative was the Campbell Fruit Farmers Union Packing Company. Both were taken over by the California Prune And Apricot Growers (known as Sunsweet).

Campbell had three major canneries, the J.C. Ainsley Packing Company, Hyde Cannery and the Payne Cannery.

Only one president has visited Campbell. In 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt passed through on his way to Panama. At the invitation of the principal of Campbell High School, Professor J. Fred Smith. The president planted a redwood tree on the school grounds. Campbell High School closed in 1980.

Campbell was incorporated as a General Law city in 1952.
