A descritpion of our beautiful Brandywine Valley, located one hour outside of Philadelphia. So much to see and do here!

The Brandywine Valley

The Brandywine Valley is located in Chester County - about one hour west of Philadelphia. Among the beautiful rolling hills is Chadds Ford - also known as Wyeth Country. Andrew Wyeth and his family have lived in Chadds Ford for many many years and have a farm not too far from the Brandywine Museum. The Brandywine Museum is located right on the Brandywine River and houses a lot of Andrew and Jamie Wyeth's paintings. You may know about Jamie Wyeth's famous painting of The Pig. This is in the Brandywine Museum. This museum also houses a collection of N. C. Wyeth's paintings and illustrations for books. My particular favorite illustration is The Pirate used as an illustration in Kidnapped.

Currently on display is a whimsical collection called A Comic Cartharis - a collection of cartoons by William Steig. This is on display through March 11th.

Also in the Brandywine Valley is the incredible Longwood Gardens - home of Piette S. DuPont. Acres of beautiful gardens and fountains await your visit. Currently an orchid exhibit is on display in the conservatory. Not just a few varieties - but hundreds of varies of orchids in all shapes and colors. You will be amazed. In the summer there is a fountain and light show accompanied by an orchestra. Fireworks are also the norm on the 4th of July!

The Battle of the Brandywine was fought near Chadds Ford and there is a park dedicated to his historic event. You will be able to see how the troops moved from town to town and set up their defenses against the enemy.

Good restaurants abount in this area including Brandywine Prime located across the street from the Brandywine Museum. This used to be the Chadds Ford Inn - an old inn where travelers stopped to spend the night.

I hope to see you in my neck of the woods some day - I think you will enjoy your time in Brandywine country!
