One of the many advantages of being married to a military man is you get a chance to be stationed in Europe,Germany. I saw the beauty of Bamberg in Northern Bavaria Germany, that is known for its high concentration of beer breweries which dates back more than 900 years.

The Beers of Bamberg

Even in a country known for its beers, Bamberg in Northern Bavaria Germany, has an unusually high concentration of breweries.
As a result, Brewmeisters of nine major breweries- an impressive number for a small university town--strive to give their beers individuality. Locals can't complain about the abundance of their wonderful Franconian keller beer, which is typically unfiltered and stored in oak barrels like in the old days.
Bamberg's brewing industry dates back more than 900 years. The key natural resource: sand. It's been said that the holes dug by miners resulted in vast tunnel system that stays at a constant temperature, making it a natural icebox and an ideal space to store beer. Since their brewing tradition predates modern refrigeration, the tunnels were used to store casks. In winter, locals collected snow and frozen river ice to place on the barrels to keep the contents cool during the rising temperatures of spring and fresh for the market well through the warmer months.

"Each morning we run downtown and smell the fresh roasted wheat that is so inviting!" my husband told me when we first moved there. "Makes you want to sit down, have a cup of coffee, relax and enjoy the view." Erik and I spend 12 happy months at the American Army base located in Bamberg.

Most people who visits Bamberg for the first time immediately fall in love with the impressive sights like the Emperor's Cathedral better known as (kaiser Dom) resting place of Henry II and Pope Clement II, and the old Town Hall, built in the middle of Regnitz River and accessible by two bridges. Little Venice (Klein Venedig), the new residence (New Residenz) with beautiful rose garden, Altenburg Castle, Michaelsberg Abbey, built in the 12th century on one of Bamberg's "Seven Hills" and many more picturesque streets, castles, places and even small alleys are on unique flair.
Bamberg prides itself with being on seven hills, s it symbolizes similarity to Rome. Its historic city center is a listed UNESCO world heritage site. Germans love to celebrate. The fest is a German tradition celebrating fine beer, good weather, and fellowship. Virtually every town, the village and even church or fire department sponsors some kind of celebration between May and October. Usually, visitors can enjoy a traditional bavarian breakfast, complete with sausages, pretzels and beer.

One of the tasty and high quality beers in town is what they called Rauchbier or smoked beer. It is made with portion of smoked barley balanced with hops. legend says that smoked beer originated when one of the breweries caught fire and some of the grains was roasted giving the grain a distinctive flavor not unlike the process of roasting coffee beans. The locals did not want to throw out roasted grain and instead decided to go ahead and make beer with it, according to Simon Hupfer, form USAG Bamberg MWR Marketing Office.
you can visit Tourist Information Center about beer-tasting tours as well s the music, architecture ,sports, arts and history attraction in Bamberg. excursions are offered on foot, kayak canoe or riverboat, even bike ride.Excursions in English or other languages cost just few Euros more per person than those in German.
