One of the finest destinations in the Berkshire Mountains is the Tanglewood Music Center in Lenox, Massachusetts. Tanglewood annually draws more than 300,000 visitors to its Tanglewood Music Festival and the Tanglewood Jazz Festival. It is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

The Center came into existence in 1937 with a donation by the Tappan family of their 210-acre estate known as Tanglewood. It came by its name because Nathaniel Hawthorne rented a small cottage from the Tappans in 1850 where he wrote his Tanglewood Tales. In memory of Hawthorne, the Tappan family renamed their estate.

In 1938, the 5,100 seat Shed was built, giving the Boston Symphony Orchestra a permanent structure in which to perform at Tanglewood. Then, in 1986, acquisition of an adjacent estate made room for the construction of the Seiji Ozawa Hall which opened in 1994.

Distinguished German conductor Christoph Eschenbach, music director of the National Symphony Orchestra, returns to the BSO podium for two programs, Friday, July 26 and Sunday, July 28. BSO Music Director Designate Andris Nelsons returns to Tanglewood on Saturday, July 27.

Multi-talented performer Harry Connick, Jr. will perform in Shed at 7 p.m. and jazz artist Donal Fox will bring the Scarlatti Jazz Project to Ozawa Hall at 1 p.m., both on Saturday, August 31.

Conductors Stéphane Denève, Keith Lockhart, Charles Dutoit, and John Williams appear together on August 6 for Tanglewood on Parade. Always a highlight of the season, the day includes a wealth of pre-concert activities and ends with the traditional finale, Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture with fireworks. Proceeds from this concert go to support the Tanglewood Music Center.

Several other concerts will take place throughout the summer months with noted guest artists returning to Tanglewood.

The Tanglewood Music Center also provides musical training for non-professionals.

An interesting bit of trivia states that Leonard Bernstein conducted the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood in August 1990 in what proved to be his last public concert.

The Tanglewood Music Center's address is 297 West Street, Lenox, MA 01240. The phone number is 413-637-1600.
