Streetcars in Atlanta? Are You Kidding Me?

Atlanta has always been a great place, but I never would have predicted they would put in street cars.

Atlanta, Georgia

My wife and I recently returned from a trip to Atlanta, Georgia. We stayed at the Sheraton because we were attending a conference in that facility. Except for a couple of side trips to Covington and Conyers, we didn’t really see much of Atlanta until the last night we were there. My wife has a cousin that lives in Atlanta and after we ate dinner at Pittypat’s Porch, her cousin drove us around downtown Atlanta.

I had always heard of the famous ‘The Varsity’ restaurant so I asked if we could drive by the eatery. I was amazed at how close it was to downtown and how accessible it is from the freeway. In fact, you can see the restaurant from the freeway. Take a quick exit, go in the opposite direction on the road parallel to the freeway and you are there in just about 3 minutes.

We also found out that Atlanta now has a permanent Ferris wheel. It is 20 stories tall and for about $14 you can ride in a climate controlled car. According to their website, the experience lasts 9 – 15 minutes with the Ferris wheel making four complete revolutions. We didn’t have time to ride it once we found out. But, I think I can work up the courage to go up next time I am in Atlanta.

But, what amazed me the most about Atlanta is the fact they are about to begin street car operations. The tracks have all been laid at the time of this writing. On October 27th, they started training the street care operators and my wife’s cousin said they have been testing them by placing sandbags in the seat to simulate people. Chances are the next time you go to Atlanta, the system will be up and running and hopefully the traffic situation downtown won’t be as bad as it normally is for Atlanta.

One more note – Conyers and Covington, Georgia are very much worthwhile visiting. Much filming for television has taken place in these two towns. The Dukes of Hazzard, Heat of the Night and Vampire Diaries are just a few of the programs that have filmed major portions of their footage in these two towns. Mystic Falls Tours will give you a great tour of the homes and other great sites used in Vampire Diaries.

The city of Atlanta having street car service is a very interesting idea. Maybe they got the idea from the city of New Orleans that does have street car service.

Tony, I would love to ride on a street car in Atlanta. That would be an adventure. I would also like to go on the Ferris Wheel. I have a friend that lives in Atlanta. I could visit her and ride on the street car and the Ferris Wheel. Great article. Thanks for sharing.
