A short walk in Strasbourg during Christmas markets

Strasbourg is a beautiful town located between the Rhine River and the Ill in Northern Alsace, close to the German-French border. Look at the map below:

Not only has this town been always an important trade hub during past times between Germany and France, due to its position pointing right in the heart of the Old Continent, but also it has become the headquarters of some of the most known European institutions such as the European Parliament.
Strasbourg is proud of its cosmopolitan culture and enjoys a beautiful cathedral, built of
rose sandstone coming from the nearby mountains, namely the Vosges range. Precisely, the 1000th anniversary of the foundation of the cathedral was celebrated a week ago.
During all December, Strasbourg will host 300 chalets spread over 10 locations, offering all you need to prepare Christmas.

Christmas atmosphere

Beside its busy and international features, Strasbourg is the main town of Alsace, one French region, internationally famous for its wines and romantic landscapes. But it's also known for its Christmas traditions.
Alsace enjoys a lot of Christmas traditions, deeply ingrained in its regional consciousness conversely to other regions. Long before the tradition of Christmas markets spread over all other French towns and regions, the city was the nest of many "special-Christmas" crafts and food.
Now, everybody is gathering there to enjoy Christmas atmosphere, particularly after sunset when all the lights are turned on in town.

Christmas discoveries

Alsace is well known for its gastronomy, wines and cooking. And cakes! Look at the size of this one, called "bretzels".
Specially for Christmas, there are dozens and dozens of specialties. I can't record them all but here are a few ones:
-leckerlis, made of ginger bread
-cinnamon stars
-shorbreads: ginger, lemon, chocolate...
Without speaking of main courses, such as "choucroute", "bakeoff", and many specialties based on delicatessen.
Don't forget the famous Alsatian wonderful wines such as Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot noir, Sylvaner...
So, as you guess, Alsace is the right place to be for Christmas!

Christmas cribs

Moreover, a lot of shops or institutions have their own windows to present cribs. This one on the photography was taken from the windows of an antique dealer in the "Carré d'Or" (Golden square, meaning the ultra centre of the town).
