A lot of history lies within the Executive Mansion, dating back to 1855. Several Illinois Governors have lived directly behind the Governor's Mansion.

The Executive Mansion has been home to Illinois governors since 1855.

Have you ever wondered where Illinois governors have lived while in office. The Executive Mansion is located at 410 East Jackson Street in Springfield, and has been the home of governors since 1855.

Of course, most of the Illinois governors have not actually lived in the Mansion, as it is a historical site today, but they reside in a private apartment behind the Mansion. The Mansion is often used for state functions, including state dinners and meetings, but the primary purpose of the facility is to serve as a historical site, and is available for tours during specific days and hours.

According to www.visit-springfieldillinois.com, "Three levels of the Executive Mansion are open to the public, including four formal parlors, a state dining room, ballroom, four bedrooms (including the Lincoln bedroom), and a library." Parts of the Mansion are closed for privacy purposes, but tourists are able to see a lot of the Mansion and even, on a rare occasion, meet the Governor.

During the Christmas holiday, several decorations are brought out and displayed on each floor of the Mansion. Several Christmas trees can be found around the inside of the Mansion, along with lights and other decorations. The Executive Mansion hires several staff members to deal with the upkeep of the Mansion and help with decorating the Mansion for the various seasons, inside and outside.

Tours of the Mansion are free to the public and handicap accessible. Tours are available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m., and also Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. For questions or to schedule a group visit, call (217) 782-6450.
