Seattle, a mesmerizing Stay in Washington State

A great visit to Seattle staying at the wonderfully welcoming Sorrento Hotel and then onto Woodville where the Willows Lodge is all you could wish for...comfort, great food and wine and so much more...

The Grand Sorrento Hotel

I was fortunate enough to travel to the Pacific Northwest, one of my favourite parts of the USA. My first ‘port of call’ was the Sorrento Hotel opened in 1909. This truly is a grand hotel and is celebrated as an historic city landmark. Originally owned by pioneer Seattle clothing merchant, Samuel Rosenberg, who had it designed and built with Italian Renaissance features inspired by his visit to Sorrento.
In that year President William Taft visited the city to open the Alaskan Yukon Exposition and such notables as the Vanderbilts, the Guggenheims and other notables of bygone eras stayed at this impressive hotel.
The Sorrento Hotel went through its 60s faze with vibrant colors of pink and green, but now after a complete refurbishment it has settled into the most luxurious and elegant with guests enjoying 400 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets with down comforters and king surround pillows on all the beds; gloriously Italianate marble bathrooms and every convenience possible for travelers and business people alike.

Gourmet Delights at the Hunt Club Restaurant

The famous Hunt Club Restaurant at the Sorrento with its rich, deep paneled interior is a perfect setting to showcase their delicious cuisine and has become one of the most romantic and top dining spots in Seattle. They are advocates of organic farming and local produce but like me have watched with dismay at the decimation of fish in the Pacific Northwest-- Copper River, Columbia River and Yakima-- partly due to changes in climate, pollutants and the red tide which has an adverse effect on shellfish.
This does not, however, disturb the artistry in food preparation and patrons from all over the U.S. visit again and again. “We eat with our eyes,” as tempting dishes with different textural components came to the table to be enjoyed-- pockets of al dente pasta stuffed with a light mix of sorrel and potato, mussels in a champagne leek and tomato broth, Oregon trout pan seared with a drizzle of truffle oil.
The wine menu is extensive and while showcasing Washington State wines, there is a fine selection of French wines too.

Willows Lodge

My next stop was at Willows Lodge that truly is a "Northwest celebration of the senses.” Opened in September 2000, this luxury retreat set in five acres of fragrant gardens is in Woodinville just a 20-minute drive from Seattle, and a short walk from Chateau Ste. Michelle and the Columbia Winery, two of Washington’s most distinguished vintners. Their superb restaurants, the internationally renowned Herbfarm and the Barking Frog are on property where you can enjoy all the delights of Northwestern cuisine.
The executive chef of the Barking Frog delights in creating new ways on an old theme. His mix of 26 different spices is rubbed into varied meats, left all night and then smoked on apple chips; a lovely assortment of fresh farmed mushrooms in a rich sauce is scented with thyme and do try the pancetta wrapped monkfish sided by corn bread pudding in a blonde ale beurre blanc.

Oh so comfortable a Stay!

Bedrooms at the Lodge are large and luxurious in glowing tapestry colors each with its own fireplace, and it was almost sybaritic sitting in my own Jacuzzi-- an integral part of the bedroom-- and watch television.
There is a library for those of us who enjoy the written word and in the lobby, a huge stone fireplace to sit and warm your self when the rains fall and the herb and foliage filled gardens outside become a misty outline.
On fine days, of course, walking, jogging, horse riding and golf are easily available and you can visit some of the local wineries whose wines you can sample each evening at the Lodge. A hidden courtyard with a hydrotherapy pool becomes a mecca for couples at night, set in an Asian inspired garden with a stone fountain, ‘tis a lovely way to relax.
A full Spa and fitness center add another dimension to the luxuries offered by Willows Lodge and their “Do Not Disturb Package” offer delights like rose petals in the bath, trays of fresh strawberries dipped in warm chocolate and champagne.
Staying at this beautiful lodge will always be a memorable experience.

This article is so spectacular, that quite apart from the star award, The owners of the Sorento should give you a free, all expenses stay.
