Qatar, the heart of the Gulf...It's a beautiful and a peaceful country. The people of Qatar are peace loving and very polite in behavior.

Qatar

When I came to Qatar back in 80's, a very few people of my country knew about the place and its location.
Qatar is my home, away home. Its neighboring countries are Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman and United Arab Emirates, but the only border sharing country is Saudi Arabia as it is a peninsula.
It is an oil rich country and the 2nd richest country in the world. It is a welfare state.
From medical facilities to education... everything is free, in other words we would say, the government is providing from cradle to coffin everything free of cost to its citizens and no income tax to anyone.

A Tourists' Attraction

Qatar is a beautiful and a peaceful peninsula, full of modern high rise buildings, variety of restaurants, hyper shopping malls, public parks with free Wi-Fi. gyms, stadiums, ice skating rinks, zoos, farms, forts, museums, beaches, sand dunes, islands and well maintained corniche along the coastline in many cities.

Singing Sand Dunes

The singing sand dunes are the beauty of desert, Qataris love to spend nights on dunes.
Sand dunes trip would be full of fun and excitement. Only you have to make sure about you are fully prepared for exposing the scorching sun... A tour of desert village, quad bike tour, sand skiing and dune bashing on a hired 4x4 vehicle are very popular here.
View of Sun setting from the combination of sea and sand are simply breathtaking!

Souq Waqif

Souq waqif is the only traditional souq (Bazaar) in the entire Gulf.
It was renovated a few years back according to traditional Qatari architectural techniques.
World's most modern coffee shops, restaurants and five stars hotels with traditional construction give the souq amazingly a fairytale touch. The fragrance of local 'Oud' (scented herb) on burning coal with puff of sweet smoke makes the ambiance spell bound.

Almost every restaurant offers local traditional 'Shisha' a water pipe with fragranced mild tobacco or herb.
It has charming maze of narrow alleys with ancient style of shops having wide variety of different spices, dried fruits, nuts, herbs, honey and Arabic perfumes.
You can find here everything which is available in Qatar.

Horses in Alleys

A central attraction of the souq is a squad of Arabian horses patrolling through the alleys with Qatari riders in their traditional dresses.
You can see a herd of camels here too.
To give it more traditional touch a section of Qatari food is also managed for cooking and offering their famous homemade food like Hareesa and Humus etc. and 'Gahwa' a hot drink, prepared by Qatari ladies.

A few more...

I would like to write some brief notes on 'Katara' the cultural village and the Museum of Islamic Art - Qatar also in my upcoming articles, as these are the tourists' main attraction here.

You took me to Qatar, Zafar. Quite a contrast to where I live - Singapore. It is like an Arabian fairy tale to me but with modern amenities interspersed with the ancient! Lovely video links too. Thanks - siva

I think souq waqif is the place to be, if you have only one day or you are in transit that its the place where you want to be. There are some more attractions
