A few tips on using public transport when visiting Melbourne

Trains, trams, buses

Trains are terrific for travelling to suburbs further than 10km from Melbourne's CBD. But be careful to avoid trains at peak times (8am - 9am and 5pm - 6.30pm weekdays) - it can be a bit of a tight squeeze! Don't rely on trains to arrive on time - always give yourself some leeway.

Trams

Trams are brilliant for travelling around in the city and nearby suburbs. They reliably take you to tourist destinations (Melbourne Zoo, MCG, Melbourne Museum, etc.) and are efficient and for the most part, comfortable. They are fantastic for interaction with locals and for people watching! Again, be cautious of trams at peak times, particularly if the route you are seeking to alight travels near a train station.

Buses

Buses will get you from A to B. Drivers are friendly and there are often interesting elderly people on board to chat to. They effectively service the need to get across town in a direction that is not serviced by trains and trams (for example, from west to east).

Tickets

Don't bother with the much-maligned Myki ticketing system. It doesn't cater for casual use sufficiently to meet your needs as a tourist. Stick to the paper 'Metcard' tickets. These can be purchased at ticket machines at train stations (cards, notes and coins accepted), on board trams (coins only), from bus drivers (cash and coins) and from various retailers (including newsagents, 7/11, etc.). The 10x2 hour ticket is a great value deal for tourists in town for a few days.

I have been to Sydney, Brisbane and a few places. Australia is a fabulous country because it is a big continent with only 15 million population. But why the crime rate is high? I wonder.
