The history of Madronia Cemetery and the people buried in Saratoga CA

Madronia Cemetery, Saratoga CA

The history of the cemetery begins in 1848 with the operation of a sawmill in the Arroyo Quito Canyon. Which was owned by William Campbell. A settlement was built to support the mill at the mouth of the canyon. The mill was leased by Martin McCarthy in 1850 and he built a toll road. McCarthy filed a claim for 230 acres and founded a town named McCarthysville.

The first recorded death was in 1854, when a boy named C.B Buckman drowned in Saratoga Creek. The boy was buried in an open filed outside of the town because there was established cemetery. Other people joined him in that area.

The current cemetery is located on what was once the Rancho El Quito , owned by the son of the former governor of Mexican California, Jose Ramon Arguello. Arguello set aside 300 acres of his land and dedicated it as a cemetery.

The Madronia Cemetery Association was formed in 1863.

Residents voted to change the name of the town to Saratoga in 1864. after the famous springs in Saratoga, New York.
