This articles describes my experience and observations of Hoy.

Whoever reads this might be surprised to learn that anyone could find the Orkney Islands to be special and well worth visiting. Strangely I found the Island I travelled to was beautiful despite its desolation.

I visited Hoy which as I should have said at the beginning of this article, is part of the Orkney Islands in far northern Scotland. At first glance tourists would likely think there was nothing to attract them, yet they would be mistaken. Hoy is a beautiful place with its quiet green fields, its native wildlife, cattle and the only pub on the island. Hoy provides tourists with a sense of peace and tranquility and nature for those people who are passionate about the natural environment.

Hoy was undoubtedly unique for the very reason that there weren't any shops, cafes, restaurants, cinemas and other forms of entertainment for both the locals and tourists. Having space to walk around without being hindered by fear and distractions was an amazing feeling and one I will never forget. For anyone who cares to philosophise Hoy is a place where people can go if they wish to experience a simpler life.

In conclusion I would recommend visiting Hoy as its space and general lack of amenities makes it a special place to visit. I would travel to Hoy again as well as the other islands as I believe they would be just as beautiful and special as Hoy.
