A challenge always spurs me on my way
Houston to London and back the following day.
I'd like to repeat this, given an appropriate occasion
I felt so empowered, even a sense of earned elation.

Leaving the Office.

My new Department Director asked me to take no leave
For the first six months of her tenure, and, of course, I agreed.
I left my desk on a Friday evening, riding the bus to the airport,
For a non-stop flight leaving Houston round about six o'clock.

I felt confident that my surprise visit would be overwhelming,.
Maybe a little ego trip, but there again, I'm human.
I love my family and looked forward to my reception
I should have recognized I was not the important person.

The Wedding

I slept during the flight and had breakfast on the plane.
I arrived at Gatwick Saturday morning, around ten maybe,
Then I traveled to my parents' home on an underground train.
I was wallking the streets of London. the stores I longed to see.

At three o'clock that Saturday I attended a family wedding
No one was surprised to see me there, intent on the bride of course,
The reception was resplendent, but no one wanted to lend an ear,
Hey, aren't you all amazed that Auntie Ivyevelyn has turned up here!

A Drink or Two!

The bride and groom drove off, cheered and waved on their way,
Good luck to them, give me a break, does anyone notice me
How can Auntie Ivyevelyn be here, hey. can you see my face.
I wanted to fling my hat on the ground and flatten it in my case.

I rested for an hour or two at my parents nearby home,
I drank a drink or two to the darling bride and groom
God Bless them, the inlaws, cousins, nephews, the whole lot
I took a cab to Gatwick, for a plane at eleven o'clock.

Back From A Mission.

They were all asleep, snoozing around the house,
To heck with them, if I'm quiet and creep just like a mouse
They might think, was Ivyevelyn here, we know she likes a drink
It looks as though she saw her way out, would they even think.

I arrived in Houston battered and tired on Sunday afternoon
Six hours in hand, time to rest and then get on my way.
I was greeted at work like an astronaut returning from a mission
Then someone said, "Yes, my dear, flight crews do that every day".

I could never have done that. I certainly hope the bride appreciated it.

What a witty piece, Ivy! I realize times have changed, especially here in Asia. No one is getting noticed, sadly, the older folks moreso! They have become dispensable! siva

Serves me right, Siva. Maybe I see just a teeny weeny amount of inflated ego on my part.
