Old Orchard Beach offers more than just a simple beach front

Location Is Everything

The state of Maine has one impressive coastline. It is intricate and wavy with many inlets and harbors. In area, it is 50 miles longer than California. It should come to no surprise that there is much to see and do along the entire coast of Maine. Located in Southern Maine in the Saco Bay area, Old Orchard Beach is an expansive seven mile beach heaped with many opportunities for entertainment. Palace Playland is located right at the beach along with many concession stands of various tastes. This is your typical fair atmosphere with games, rides, and carnies. It is slightly sleazy but somehow endearing as this is small scale compared to bigger amusement parks. There are rooms for rent in the immediate area and surrounding the beach for those wanting to take in many hours of the carnival atmosphere.

Saco Bay

Saco Bay may only be ten miles wide, but it is a host for many forms of activity suited for the young and old alike. Fishing is a popular sport shared by many. Some people walk along the jetty for close to a mile with their fishing poles to get in on the action, while others rent boats of various sizes, depending on how hard you want to play and what kind of fishing you wish to do. The bay is so beautiful, some folks opt to take photos or simply relax on deck. There are also kayaks for paddling and charters in the immediate area for a sea adventure on the bay. It is not too uncommon to spot a Windjammer or Schooner sailing by during the warmer months. Between the beaches, amusement and water parks, golf courses, shops, and flea markets, there is bound to be something of interest to do for almost anyone.

More Than Water On The Bay

A nice activity to consider while at Old Orchard Beach and the Saco Bay area is indirectly related to the bay itself but you can still get a glorious view. Saco Bay Trails offer many trails for different fitness levels and scenery. These are typically open year round, which considering they are in Maine, says a lot. You can take in the view in all seasons including perhaps making time for a snow shoe trek in the Winter. Valuable information and membership options are available. You may also want to check the condition of the trails prior to your visit. As a nonprofit organization, all the volunteers work hard for the trails to remain open to the pubic for this well received recreation.

Your article took me back to the mid-sixties when I lived for a couple of years in Kennebunkport. I miss the coast of Maine - nothing like it anywhere else. Thanks, finka
