Norway, home of the Vikings, spectacular scenery and awesome fjords. This is your guide to the way north.

Norway - your next destination

Norway is home to about 4,7 million people. The country´s captial is Oslo situated in the southeast of the country and with an estimated population of 580,000 inhabitants.

The country streches from 58 to 71 degrees North and is located approximately at the same latitude as Alaska. The country enjoys moderate, snowy winters and pleasant summers due to the effect of the gulf stream along the coastline. Also, due to its location, midnight sun can be seen from late May to late July north of the Artic Circle (66,67 degrees north).

The most noteable cities are Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, Tromsø and Stavanger.

Bergen was founded by Germans during the Hansatic period around the 15th century, and the area around the harbour (Bryggen) has maintained is appearance and old buildings from this era. Bergen is also the gateway to the famous and spectacular fjords. The longest being the Sognefjord, but maybe the most beautiful is Geirangerfjorden.

Many toursists prefer to take the Hurtigruten, a passanger boat, to see the impressive coastline and scenery. The Hurtigruten departs from Bergen and stops at various cities on its way to Norway´s northernmost city Hammerfest.

Politically Norway is a stable democratic country, with King Harald as the Soverign of the nation. The country is also one of the worlds riches due to large supplies of oil and gas in the North Sea. Fisheries and related industries are also a major source of income. The social welfare system is one of the best in the world and crime rates low.

Most tourists coming to Norway enjoys culture, fantastic nature and wildlife not found elsewhere in Europe.

In my following articles I will highlight places of interest for a foreigner visiting the country.

See you!
