In answer to Mark's Travel and Tourism challenge, I decided to recall a lovely cottage holiday I had with my family in the summer of 2011. The cottage was near a peaceful canal in Shropshire, England.

A Peaceful and Unusual Holiday ...overlooking a canal at Norbury Wharf, in the Peak District,

As a family we were looking for somewhere to stay out of the ordinary, for our summer holiday.

We came across a charming holiday cottage, which overlooked a canal. The cottage would sleep eight people, and as there was only four of us we had plenty of room there to chill out.

The cottage was situated in particularly peaceful wharf. The wharf included a lovely little tea room and shop

On the opposite side of the canal, a two minute walk over a small road bridge, was a quaint little pub and restaurant called 'The Junction' where you could spend an evening wining and dining with the family. Outside on the verandah I took very much delight in watching the narrow boats chugging up and down. I also enjoyed watching the many ducks walking and swimming in the canal as I was sat down enjoying a pint of fine ale. Come and join me, and see my video of the canal.... :-
its my round

Down the towpath

There was a lovely walk down the side of the canal on a tow path where you could see the variety of different boats moored up there.

We chatted to a few people on vacation in the narrow boats, as we walked by ...such a peaceful way of life...

A poem about life on the canal at Norbury Wharf

The Narrowboat

Open thy steam valve me dear old ma,
Let's get th'old boat on t'steam.
There's no better time than on t'canal
Where thy can sit and dream.

Let's tarry a while at t'junction pub,
Tell me stories of long ago, ma,
Of the time thy was drunk, dropped key in t'brook,
And thy spent t'whole night in the bar!

A creative poem by my friend Bev, SongbirdB about Lock Gates and life on the canal

Flower Tubs on top of Narrowboat

Some people were living permanently on the narrowboats. The red narrowboat opposite came all the way from Staverton, in Wiltshire, a beautiful county in the South West of England!

Such Memories of Peace and Tranquility

We all had very happy memories of our summer holiday there and would love to return sometime.

I hope you all enjoyed coming on vacation with me and my family!

Yes cowboy my friend they are working narrowboats and they move up and down the canal. Most of them have diesel engines. SOme of them are more static than others...
