No cheap Flights this year

When I booked my flights from London to Washington this year, I was amazed at the price hike.

No cheap Flights this year

Every year , we go from London to visit my grand daughters in America, in June, as the flights are usually cheaper before the schools break up, and the weather is not too hot. This year is particularly special, as my middle grand daughter Katey, is now 18, and graduating from school to college.

I started checking the prices right after Christmas to get a good flight and car deal. I know there is a lot of unrest at the moment, with petrol and oil prices, and of course, you guessed it, the prices are sky high. I kept getting emails from CHEAPFLIGHT about special deals. They certainly looked tempting, with Washington £309, or similar, but it was a phone only deal, and each time I rang up, surprise surprise, they had all gone, and I was offered flights at twice the price! After a while I got wise to that.

So I did this

I went onto loads of price comparison web sites, but some of them were listing the price as much as £1,000, or else cheaper flights if you were prepared to travel all around the moon first, and change, with flying time that is normally only 8 hours, listed as 23 hours.

I started to think the world has gone mad, so went into 2 local travel agents. They both quoted me high prices, but then went down by £200, but it was still too high for the two of us to pay. We sat down and talked about it. I was determined to go, but Keith knows how stubborn I am, and he gently pointed out we would have to take the cheaper of the two, even though it was more than double what we paid last year.

He phoned the agent, who then informed him that because the plane was filling up, our price had risen to £200 more again. He was going to take that, but this is where my sense of injustice came in. I went back on the web, determined that there must be a deal out there for us, if I had one more look.

At Last a result

Well I think an angel was taking care of me, because I clicked on a link, and there it was British Airways, non stop flight, and a discount of 15% if we hired the car too. I booked it immediately, and have now worked out, that although it cost £360 more than last year, we have saved £430 on the lowest of the other quotes.

I am so relieved, but just hope that there are no air strikes with BA, which have been threatened, nor any surcharges because oil has gone up again.

The moral of my story is, IF AT FIRST YOU DON’T SUCCEED, TRY AGAIN.

Carol, I know exactly how you feel. I am going out to Utah next month and I was astonished to find that it would cost 1200.00 for me to fly there. Thankfully, my son will be driving me or I would not be able to go see my babygirl. Now, as you have mentioned. How much will fuel be next month, geesh! I hope you have a wonderful holiday and congrats to your granddadughter.
Thank you for sharing.:)
