While the northern hemisphere is feeling the cold as Christmas approaches, New Zealand welcomes summer with high hopes for Christmas.

The wait for summer is over

Having just read the delightful poem and viewed the phortographs of Delicia Powers and husband Mike Powers in the poem, A Woodland Christmas I was inspired by the beauty of the winter wonderland portrayed.
Here at my home in New Zealand, we are not only at the other end of the world, but are also in the opposite season - summer. And how we are enjoying it. With summer officially only a few days old, there is already promise of a long hot summer ahead.
I wanted to share this comparison in seasons with you all and so grabbed my camera and ventured outside. The early Saturday morning shadows are almost gone as the warmth of the sun starts to make its mark.

Bathed in Sunshine

The backyard is tiny, but a real sun trap where time an be spent outdoors. All is quiet at our place. The young men who lived in the house over the fence have moved out and the house will be unoccupied over the summer, until the new university year begins. We are tucked away from the busy street traffic, enjoying privacy. This is where we'll enjoy summer barbecues over the holiday season.

The grapes are growing

Our section is tiny, but allows space to grow the things we enjoy. The grapes are looking good this year, spreading along the fence, even over into the neighbours place. That's okay, his passionfruit does the same, giving us both an adequate supply of both fruits.
Now all we have to worry about is the birds, who return to feast on our grapes each summer.

It isn't summer without strawberries

Even our strawberries are making an early appearance this summer. The two shown here peek shyly from beneath their cover, enough to tempt us with thoughts of strawberries and icecream. Again, the birds have come to know where they can feast and so we'll be watching closely.

Summertime Christmas in New Zealand

Most of you probably can't imagine a summer time Christmas. But here in New Zealand it's what we know and love. There's no better way to relax with family and friends over Christmas, enjoying summer holidays or vacations at the same time. Barbecues sizzling, beaches and lakes luring us, outdoor sunshine and freedom, all contribute to a relaxing summer time Christmas in New Zealand.

As I,and the Powers, and many others, are in Winter Wonderlands, I feel like you are teasing us with your sunny New Zealand winter.

Mmm- strawberries, grapes. What a strange thing it is to think of these things being around at Christmas. We're more for nuts and clementines in England. Have a lovely Christmas, dear Val.

For me in these dark, shortening days waiting for the birth of the new Sun and Jesus it is strange to see the other hemisphere of the world with sunshine and strawberries at Chistmas time. Thanks for sharing this experience. Though I wonder what myths and rites do or did native New Zealanders have around the turning points of the year like the equinox in spring and autum and midsummer's and midwinter's day.
But anyway, may it be winter or summer, have a Merry Cristmas, Val.
Best Regards,
Ibolya
