The Pallavas regined from Kanchipuram, one of the seven holy cities of India even to day. Further south is Chidambaram with its famous temple, built where Shiva is believed to have danced the cosmic dance.

Near Madras, on the shore, stands a group of temple, carved into chariots, a legacy of the sea going Pallavas (450 -900 A.D.). This is Mamallapuram, an excellent beginning for a tour of Tamil Nadu's renowned temples, as the sculpture here is breathtaking. The Pallavas regined from Kanchipuram, one of the seven holy cities of India even to day. Further south is Chidambaram with its famous temple, built where Shiva is believed to have danced the cosmic dance.

Thanjavur and Madurai are temple cities where architecture is resplendent in its expression of art and religion, while off the coast. Rameswaram, sacred to Rama, is the location of the most highly regarded Dravadian style temple with its many pillared corridors. And at the tip of India, at Kanyakumari, is a temple to the virgin Goddess, while a memorial marks the place where the sage Vivekananda mediated.
