Here, a traveller may find ideas to organise a specific national day of sorts to have the feeling that he´s there.
National day of Mexico
I love travelling, but when I say travelling, I really mean travelling as I always find a difference between travellers and tourists.
The first ones will plan their journeys carefully and with a purposel and they´ll spend some time, saving money for it. They dislike crowds and they´ll go their way and wherever they wish to go.
Tourists need a travel agent to organise their journeys and they always move in groups, watching what everyone in the group watches. They seem to be contented with a guide, exclaiming "Well, this is Athens and tomorrow we´ll be in Hamburg." as if the cradle of civilization could be seen in a couple of days!
However, real travelling isn´t cheap even if one´s going on a budget and tries the cheapest accommodation and grub. It also takes time and if one has responsabilities, it can only be possible if one takes a sabbatical.
Thus, one has to be contented with virtual travelling via the Internet, watching videos in real time. It isn´t the same as being there to have a feel of it, but that´s better than nothing.
There´s another homemade option to make us feel we are there: to celebrate a specific national day at home with friends and if possible with few folks from the country concerned.
Mexico have several national days, but, perhaps, the two most important ones are on May 5th and on September 16th.
On one May 5th, Mexicans fought their battle of Puebla against French troops that at that time was one of the best armies and they won.
On September 16th, Mexicans were summoned to fight Spaniards that led to the founding of Mexico as an independent nation.
Since May 5th is around the corner, it´d be good idea to celebrate at home on such a day. With a bit of imagination and well to do, it´d be an enjoyable day to give us a feel that we are in Mexico DF and beyond.
The food should be the usual grub: enchiladas, fajitas, tacos, burritos, guacamole and whatever delicious dish well made that brings us the flavour of Mexico. All of them well spiced with tequila and their fine beer to wash it down.
