My visit to Budapest

After a journey to Budapest with some good friends last year, i wanted to share a bit about my experieces.

Budapest is a city in Hungary, actually two cities, Buda and Pest, separated by the Danube River. My visit to Budapest was my first ever visit to an Eastern European/ former communist city. My initial impression was quite mixed, on one hand, I was thrilled to be in a new place seeing new things, on the other hand it was quire daunting being in a place where I couldn't understand the language at all (as a language enthusiast I usually find some way of learning some of the language before going to any new place, but Hungarian is a language I find particularly difficult to grasp).

Historic sights and communist frights

The city itself is filled with history, amazing cathedrals, bridges crossing the beautiful Danube River and a gigantic citadel overlooking the city (although we visited the city in February and the snow and fog left an unfortunate veil over much of the landscape. As students, my friends and I were also eager to try out the night life Budapest has to offer, and there truly were some great venues hidden within a labyrinth of old buildings.
One of the negative points of Budapest is that in among the history you’ll see the communist past plaguing random corners with what I would class as distinctly horrible architecture that sticks out with no sympathy for the beautiful area they inhabit.

In conclusion I would definitely visit Budapest again and would recommend Budapest as a holiday destination for the historically minded and even students. I would, however, suggest a visit during the summer when you can really get a true taste of the beautiful scenery around the city and from the amazing citadel.

Good post. I have not travelled outside my own country (Canada) but like to read about different cultures.

I would love to travel to Budapest thank you for telling us about your trip. I think I would want to take a river cruise.
