If you have never been to Mackinac Island, Michigan, you are in for a treat. No autos are allowed on the island, one walks or bikes everywhere.

The Grand Hotel

If you have never been to Mackinac Island, Michigan, you are in for a real treat. It's at the top of Lake Huron, on the Straits of Mackinac, very close to the Canadian border. A high-speed ferry whisks you to the island from St, Ignatus or Mackinac City, where you can walk or bike to The Grand Hotel. The Grand Hotel is just that .... grand. It's 660 feet porch is the largest in the world and overlooks the Tea Garden and huge swimming pool. Built in 1867, room rates at that time were $3-$5 American dollars a night.

Motorized vehicles have been banned from the island since 1898 and everyone walks, bikes or rides in horse-drawn carriages. You may remember the movie, Somewhee in Time, which was filmed at The Grand Hotel. The movie starred Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour.

The downtown has many shops and restaurants including their famous Mackinac fudge. Tourists are sometimes referred to as "fudgies".

The Grand has a total of 343 rooms and meals are served in the elegantly appointed dining room. It takes 500,000 gallons of water to fill Grand Hotel's swimming pool, which was named for actress Esther Williams who starred in the 1947 movie This Time for Keeps, shot at Grand Hotel.

The Grand Hotel experience includes dressing for dinner. Evening wear is required in all areas of the hotel: coat and tie for gentlemen, and dress or pantsuit for ladies after 6:30 p.m.

I hope you get a chance to travel to The Grand. I know you will enjoy this experience. Happy traveling!

Nice place. I had to smile at the fact that motorized vehicles have been banned since 1898. When were cars invented? Were they banned right from the start?

Cars were around before that, believe it or not. I think no cars is a nifty idea!
