My trip to Italy. A close experience with history I had heretofore observed just in picture collections and motion pictures. The landmarks, culture, scenery and food from the immense Colosseum to the spread of Olive trees-that blow one's mind!
Day 8 of 11. One of the most beautiful, spectacular sights of the world: Isle of Capri

Assisi – Pompeii – Naples - Capri

We left Assisi in the morning and proceeded to the Island of Capri. On the way we stopped by at Pompeii, the ancient city near Naples. The ruins of Pompeii are interesting and well preserved. One of them was a huge grind stone in what could have been a bakery. Pompeii has endless ruins. Even today, excavation goes on. Almost all of us had gelatos after the tour in the hot sun and then we proceeded to Capri. On the way, there was a major traffic jam on the opposite side of the street due to an accident. Our tour guide said it would probably take hours to clear that up. Alberto, our excellent driver, found a side road which was a better route.

Arrival in Capri

We arrived at the bottom of the hill and from there took a boat and then a Funnicular to the top of the hill. The beauty of this place cannot be described, it is just superb. Everybody had a different view from their room. We had the view of the rocks from the terrace of our room. I simply had to play the song “Isle of Capri” by Frank Sinatra , on You Tube on my tablet.
In the evening we went for a walk and watched the skies change color over the blue waters.

Capri

We all went our own way for dinner that night. We had dinner on a quaint balcony, just enough room for two people. The space in Capri is so limited; people come up with ingenuous methods to make room. The balcony overlooked the street and we could see some of our tour mates roaming there. The manager, a balding old Italian man, greeted us with a “Namaste”. Earlier, a store vendor did the same. It was so nice to hear a familiar greeting in a distant land.

We returned to the hotel after eating some more gelatos and gathered on the terrace along with other tour mates .Everybody was talking about the main square, the people walking around, and above all the way they were dressed. I was astonished to hear them call out the suit/dress/shoes/purse and comment on their price tag! I suppose ignorance can be bliss sometimes. While I could make out that they were indeed well dressed, I had no clue of the name brands they were talking about, much less their price. I also got a short history about the Capri pants, and how Jackie Kennedy had popularized them. Everyone absolutely loves the island, but I don’t think I can live there every day. Nice place to visit, but not to stay. It was quite chilly that night.
