My trip to Italy. A close experience with history I had heretofore observed just in picture collections and motion pictures. The landmarks, culture, scenery and food from the immense Colosseum to the spread of Olive trees-that blow one's mind!
Day 7 of 11 : Welcome to the atmosphere of peace that prevails in Assisi .

Venice - Assisi

( A scenic drive through the Apennine Mountains to peaceful Assisi )
(St. Francis’ Basilica , and St. Clare’s Church)

We left Venice in the morning and made a few stops while in transit to Assisi. Auto Grill resembles an immense 7/11 store in Italy, which serves hot lunches as well. Globus transport stops at regular intervals for breaks, which was great, particularly for my swollen feet. I had a nice vegetarian lasagna. We were at Assisi by 3pm. The weather has been to a great degree great to us. It was predicted to have rained all the time we were in Venice; however we really had great weather. The rains came pouring down when we were heading to Assisi, and miraculously ceased when we arrived there! The first glance of Assisi is from the bus, perched on top of a hill, the white walls against a dark mountain background. The sight of it is breath taking. We were almost immediately met by a local tour guide. Assisi is the birth place of St. Francis.

Basilica di San Francesco

The beautiful basilica has many Frescoes telling the story of St. Francis. It is the name the present Pope has taken. We climbed uphill with the guide narrating many stories of the landmarks there. The country is so rich in history! The main square ( Piazza del Comune) has the columns of Roman temple. The view from the top of the hill is spectacular. The travel guide completed his walking narrative tour and left us to explore on our own.

Streets of Assisi

The sloping pathways of Assisi were a joy to stroll in. It is amazing to see how many ways people find to make a living. One of the things that stood out was a man , who stood unmoving, like a statue.
Dinner was courtesy of Globus at the same hotel we stayed in. Another excellent Italian meal. After dinner a few of us met up on the terrace and chit chatted enjoying the view of the countryside and the lights of the basilica.
The trip had really brought a lot of us together. Sitting on the balcony, looking out on the evening sky, we shared many thoughts with each other. We were all fully aware that we may never see each other once the trip was over, but at that moment it did not matter. It was just a harmonious feeling .
