On the Old Mission Peninsula in Northern Michigan, you will find the Mission Point Lighthouse. The Lighthouse was built in 1870 and is located on the 45th parallel of latitude, which is halfway between the equator and north pole.

On the Old Mission Peninsula in Northern Michigan, you will find the Mission Point Lighthouse. The Lighthouse was built in 1870 and is located on the 45th parallel of latitude, which is halfway between the equator and north pole.

For a mere $4.00 you can tour the lighthouse and see the Keeper’s office, his quarters and if steep tiny steps aren’t an issue for you, you can climb to the top to view Lake Michigan. Sadly I didn’t venture right to the top because I witnessed another woman having a very difficult time getting down. The stairs are very narrow and hard to maneuver.

Water Level

Nevertheless, I was happy with what I was able to see. As you can see from the photos, the water level is at an all time low. Its kind of an ominous sight and its amazing how far out you can walk before even hitting the water.

Keeper of the Lighthouse

Something else of interest is the fact that you can volunteer to be a keeper at the lighthouse. Its called the Lighthouse Keeper Program and you volunteer to stay in the actual lighthouse, meet and greet visitors and run the small gift shop. Your quarters included a bedroom , full kitchen, bathroom as well as a living and dining area. I think that would be a great opportunity but first I have to know if they have internet...lol

I enjoyed our little venture to the lighthouse and would love to go back for a sunset. Not sure I will fit it in this time but perhaps next time.

I love lighthouses. Thank you for sharing. Perhaps one day I can volunteer to serve as a lighthouse keeper.
