Family Circle Magazine selected Maple Valley Washington for its annual top ten best town and cities for families. After making it our home for 25 years I have no argument with the family magazine.

Best of both worlds: city shopping convenience & country living

When I learned that Family Circle Magazine selected Maple Valley for its annual top 10 best towns and cities for families, I felt as proud as if I were the town's mayor.

Although I claim no such distinction, my spouse and I have made Maple Valley our home for 25 years and in that time we've seen many changes.

A quarter of a century of seeing the town go from a few business to the "fastest growing market areas in Washington State' is an exciting thing to bear witness to.

In 1987 we moved to Maple Valley when my spouse (A King County Sheriff) was asked to head the Hicks Rayburn police precinct. It gave him a chance to get to know the people he would serve in Maple Valley and it gave me an opportunity chance see stars at night, be walking distance from Lake Wilderness park, and live on the greenbelt side of a golf course.

Maple Valley has gone to college: a high percentage of the adult residents are college educated and the Tahoma School District has a good reputation for educating children and is diligent in pursuing new opportunities for them.

And with its tree lined streets, community parks, and in many neighborhoods (including ours) an extensive trail systems that lead to Lake Wilderness Park, the Arboretum, and Maple Valley Library I feel I have the best of both worlds: the shopping convenience of the city and the ambience and nostalgia of living in the country.

In April ground was broken first major commercial development project since the city incorporated) we will soon have a Fred Meyer, MultiCare, stand-alone restaurants, and major bank. The Family Circle write-up touted the quality of the school district, but also cited other criteria that Maple Family "family friendly": accordable homes, access to health care, green space, low crime rate and financial stability were mentioned.

Does it sound like I'm a little bit chauvinistic about Maple Valley? Guilty as charged.
