My husband and I lived in The Hague for three months and worked there. It was a wonderful experience and I have fond memories of the Dutch people.

Living in The Hague

My husband and I were hitchhiking around Europe and were traveling through The Netherlands. When we got to The Hague, it was such a beautiful city that we decided to stop a while, get jobs, and rent a small apartment. We knew friends of friends who lent us bicycles to get around - love those bike lanes. I was biking around when I discovered an office called the Insurance Company of North America. Now I had worked for this company when I first got out of high school. I was amazed that they were in The Hague, but there it was. A beautiful office building, too. I went inside to see about getting a job and was hired on the spot. The office manager told me that he kept a job for transient American travelers. I just typed all day - but who cared! It was a job. My husband found a job also. We found a small apartment and our new neighbors were so nice and lent us a small refrigerator. We were very happy living in The Hague and spent our weekends biking to the far corners of The Netherlands. The small towns along the canals were beautiful. We traveled to Delft, just outside The Hague, and enjoyed the many bridges over the canals as well as the Delft factory which produces all the blue and white delft china.

We also spent some weekends at a beach resort on the North Sea called Scheveningen. The beaches were filled with cabanas to protect the sunbathers from the wind. The water was cold and few dared swim. But it was a beach and had a small boardwalk and amusement area for the children.

I was allowed to take a few hours off from work to see the Queen of The Netherlands as she rode in her golden coach to address Parliament. The Hague, being the government seat of The Netherlands, has a parliement buiding and many other government buildings. It also boasts a royal castle which was wonderful.

We truly enjoyed our time in The Netherlands and would go back in a heart-beat to that wonderful little country. My co-workers were wonderful and we met a few years later while we were in Bermuda. They had been transferred there by INA and lived a few blocks from the beach. How lucky they were!

Try visiting Holland some time - you will be so glad you did.

A friend of mine used to say "hague" instead of "hey" ... since knowing this place it has always been one of my dream destination :)
