Lefkada (Greece) is a beautiful big island located in the Ionian sea with wonderful beaches, and amazing activities to do. The island of Lefkada has many tourists in the summertime and the restaurants fill up with many people outsiders and locals. It is a very beautiful and historical island going all the way back to the 1800's and suffering in World war II.

Lefkada Ionian Islands

Lefkada is the perfect place for vocation the beautiful crystal blue green waters and white sand beaches it makes the perfect spot for swimming and even sit and enjoy the sun. With over a million attractions you can visit the whole island either by a sea taxi or by cycling, or maybe renting a car for the day to tour around. There are many historical sites around Lefkada from the war of 1821 all the way to World war II.

The war of 1821 (Lefkada)

In 1821 when the Greek Turkish war broke out Lefkada was the center for guns and the best Military leaders that the greek army had. The castle that still sits outside the city was built to keep the enemy out of Greek territory at sea when the enemy use to approach the Greeks would light up the canons and aim at the enemy that was one of the greatest defenses in history. Lefkada suffered enormously during the war people died from hunger and from being mistreated by the enemy. In March 25 1821 the greeks rebelled against the Turks and from there we got our Greek independence and gained our freedom. The 1821 war played a very important part in the Greek culture that is why there are many tourist attractions in Lefkada from the 1821 war that holds a great history.

World war II (Lefkada)

During World war II Lefkada was a big target for the German and Italian soldiers that is why the people of Lefkada took a lot of Italian words and learned many Italian songs and cuisine. In world war II the italians helped the ionian islanders very much to defeat the German army and to gain their freedom. In October 28 1940 the greeks rebelled against the German army in the greek mountain Pindos and that was how the greeks got their freedom from World war II. That is why today Lefkada has a lot of historical sites that cover a lot of history and explain to you with detail everything that took place there during the war, it is a beautiful island with very rich history and splended tradition too.
