I gave up driving

After many years of driving passing my test at 17, the age you can drive in the UK I decided to give it up because of the cost of driving in the UK.

I gave up my car

All I wanted to do when I left school at 16 was to learn to drive soon as I was 17, it was only my really plan that I had once leaving school.

I passed my first time and I was soon driving no matter where, I’d loved to drive. I’ve driven almost all over the UK, I loved nothing more than getting into my car and going somewhere.

After 30 years of driving and doing 100’s and thousands of miles I finally gave up driving because of the cost of driving these days. Maybe I won’t have however my car failed the annual MOT test which we have here in the UK. My car need so much work doing to it I first decided I would take off the road for a time and get it repaired and then put it back on the road, which never happened.

The longer I left it off the road the more I realized how much it was costing me to have a car in the UK. If you haven't sat down and worked out the cost, you may be surprised. fuel, repair, insurance, road tax, MOT etc. I’d always been a high mileage driver, some years driving over 30,000 miles. The cost of fuel at over £6 per gallon over $9 I decided enough is enough and sold my car.

Public transport

Public transport I rely on these days and to be fair it seems to be ok, there are at times when you wish I still had a car. If you plan ahead you are ok and often much cheaper than gong by car. I can get from where I live in the UK to Plymouth some 270 miles for less than £20, it would be more than double that in fuel. Ok some things you can’t do or get to without a car but it not stopped me travelling. These days I just sit back and let someone else to the worry of driving.

Maybe one day I will have another car, however for the time being I happy not to have one.

The photo was taken one early morning over looking a motorway bridge.

Where I live in the US, it would be impossible to get around without a car. Public transport is nearly non-existent. An element I love in larger cities is being able to get around via trolley, bus, or subway.
