Many of these convents and monasteries were built centuries ago and they´re located in all the regions in Spain.

Holy places to offer accommodation

Despite this economic crisis, the nuns or monks aren´t getting more young people to join in their Orders to devote their lives to silence, prayers and labour. It seems that people aren´t ready to go apart from the maddening world. Thus, these Orders are getting smaller, because their members get sick and die of old age. Thus, the initiative to offer accommodation to travellers and tourists started long ago in an attempt to get an income to keep their convents and monasteries.
There´re convents and monasteries in all the regions of Spain and this type of accommodation should suit to the real traveller, aiming for few days of quietude in stunning surroundings.
Many of these Orders charge a price for accommodation, including three square meals in the communal dining room, but others, like the Carmelites, don´t charge anything, but they expect people to give them something on departure.
These are places of quietude and real luxury that not many hotels can beat. A traveller will be able to stroll and to stay in the cloisters and gardens and depending on their rules, they will able to meet the nuns or monks at meal times or in the chapel.
In some convents and monasteries, visitors are expected to respect the premises as a holy place of quietude an prayer and also to attend some of their religious services regardless of beliefs.
A traveller will be given keys for the front door as well as the one of a room, so, a traveller is free to go out to see the surroundings
In some convents or monasteries, they may take women and men, but in the majority of them, they only take women or men, depending on whether it´s a monastery ran by monks or a convent ran by nuns.
These holy places of payer and quietude are historical buildings that were built several centuries ago and they´re located in beautiful places, giving a chance to the traveller to enjoy few days of peace and rest as well as getting to know this place at one´s pace and likes.
