These areas are recognized by the National Park Service. These areas draw the curiosity of travelers near and far because there is so much adventure, discovery and education.

Historic and Scenic Areas in Louisiana

These areas are recognized by the National Park Service.

Cane River National Heritage Area is known for it’s Creole architecture. This heritage area is located in the town of Natchitoches, Louisiana. Also located in this area is the Cane River Creole National Historical Park. The area spans 116,000 acres. This is the oldest community covered by the Louisiana Purchase.

New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park is ,located near the French Quarter. Jazz is recognized as one of the widest genres of music in America. This park spans an area of 4 acres in the Louis Armstrong Park. There is a large visitors center that welcomes visitors.

Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve it’s main headquarters is located in New Orleans. Other units are located in St. Bernard Parish, Barataria (Crown Point) and Acadiana(Lafayette). It protects that natural resources of the Mississippi Delta Region.

Poverty Point National Monument is located in Epps Louisiana. It displays earthworks and mounds that was built during the Archaic period by Native Americans. This is considered the most largest ceremonial site found in North America.

Sabine River/Bayou is located in Winn Parish. This has been designated as a National Wild and scenic River.

Louisiana has 22 state parks and 17 state historic sites. There is only one state preservation area.
