Thinking of taking a trip to Harrogate? Here is my Average Jan guide......

Harrogate, first appearances count

HarrogateThe first thing I have to say is that as you get within a mile of Harrogate you know that you are in for a treat. This is a town that is always in bloom and everywhere from the roadside to shop exteriors has the most beautiful flower displays that I have ever seen. The council has men watering huge expanses of flowered borders and everywhere looked neat and well tended. There are great outdoor areas to allow people to sit for lunch, enjoy family picnics and we found the whole town very spick and span.
Parking was plentiful and a bus station was located right in the town centre. We did not find a park and ride but there were plenty of signs to lead you to town carparks.
Many of the houses were very grand and this Spa town which I have heard refered to as the Cheltenham of the north still has Turkish baths I believe.

So where can I find something to eat...........

So
I have to say I am a great fan of the 'J D Wetherspoon' Chain. It is cheap and cheerful and the buildings that have been converted into these popular eating houses are always designed with the utmost care and effort. You will not be disappointed with the 'Wetherspoon' we found in Harrogate. It had been something to do with the baths I was lead to believe and grandure at its best comes to mind.
As you enter you are overlooking a huge dining area and aproach this by desending down a beautiful twin staircase. The whole area lends itself to Art deco in style and I could imagine Agatha Christie putting pen to paper such was the atmosphere. We had a hearty breakfast and later went back for a late lunch. Both myself and Hubby were very pleased with the food, quick service, friendly waitress and the toilets were worth a visit even if you didn't want to 'go'.
We had also been told about the fantastic 'Bettys Tea Rooms'. World famous they are certainly worth a visit. There was a small queue outside so we did not venture in. The prices are clearly displayed outside so think of this as an exclusive treat where you will be having a speciality tea. We looked through the windows and it did look amazing, very busy, very popular and will be on our to do list next time.
Harrogate has a variety of places to eat for all pocket sizes.

Harrogate .....What Did Average Jan Think Of Her First Visit?

Harrogate
I loved this Spa town of the north. It had everything a visitor for the first time could wish for. We caught it on a lovely sunny day in July 2011 and found it not only a friendly place but had an array of shops big and small to keep us occupied the whole day.
Myself and hubby are Charity shop visitors and proud. He likes the books and I like treasure hunting. Harrogate has all the major charity shops and a few more.
Hubby likes hard-wear shops and there were several of these, very reasonable in price and helpful.
I am a Spiritualist and I always enjoy a trip to a 'spiritual type shop'. I found a most excellent one called 'the Zentist'. The lady owners were very friendly and the shop had all types of amazing eye catching items from a full set of black angel wings (I was tempted) to sparkling stones. They had dowsing rods and many 'spiritual' books and meditation cds.
We also discovered a fab retro shop called 'Space'. It was just great for me to wander around this shop and the attention to detail in display within the shop was refreshing. The young lady serving was very friendly and kindly let me take some photos to share with you.
Harrogate has some very upmarket shops and many boutiques. I think this array of different shopping experiences along with an antiques centre keeps you constantly enthralled. We saw a small outdoor farmers market on the day we visited too. The whole town is one pleasant experience with a well planned layout that draws you in and makes you want to stay. There are plenty of places to sit and take in the imagined atmosphere of a bygone age . There is a choice of hotels, bed and breakfast rooms and we even saw a Travel Lodge that we may use in the future.Remember we only had one day there to just dip our toe into this lovely town . Will we go back? Try stopping us!
