The History and People of San Jose

San Jose is the "Capital of the Silicon Valley" and the third largest city in the state. San Jose is in the South Bay approximately fifty miles south of San Francisco. The city is 175 Square Miles. The city has an altitude of 4,372 feet at it's highest point. The 2010 population of the city is 954,942. The population is divided evenly between men 475,668 (50.3%) and women 404,437 (49.7%). San Jose has a large Asian population at 303,138 (32.0%) and Hispanic population at 313,636 (33.2%). The white population is 404,274 The median age is 35.2.

Ohlone Indians settled in the Santa Clara Valley around 4000 years ago. The Spanish friars established a chain of twenty one missions stretching from San Diego (founded in 1769) to Sonoma (founded in 1812). Mission Santa Clara De Asis was founded Father Junipero Serra in 1777. The eighth mission in the chain. In 1825 The mission had 1450 "devout souls" mainly Indian converts. In 1839, only 300 Indians remained at the mission.

On the orders of the Viceroy of New Spain, five settlers and their families, nine soldiers and a cowboy lead by Jose Joaquin Moraga left Mexico and established the first pueblo in California. Pueblo San Jose De Guadalupe on November 29, 1777. The Spanish name means Town of Saint Joseph of Guadalupe. In 1778 the pueblo had a population of 68.

Mexico won independence from Spain in 1821, but San Jose did not pledge allegiance to the new country until May 10, 1825. San Jose was a small town of Chileans, Mexicans, Peruvians, Indians And Spanish Californians.

The United States declared war on Mexico on May 13, 1846. Captain Thomas Fallon entered San Jose with nineteen men on July 14, 1846 marching from Santa Cruz. Captain Fallon raised the flag which was given to him by Commodore Stockton over the Juzgado. California was ceded to the United States by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ending the Mexican War in 1848.

San Jose became supply depot for the gold miners in 1848-1849.

California became the thirty first state on September 9, 1850. San Jose was the first state capital. The first state legislature opened in San Jose on December 15, 1849 known as the "legislature of 1000 drinks." The first governor was Peter Burnett. The first mayor was Josiah Belden.

The first commercial farming of broccoli in 1922 by Stephen and Andrea D'Arrigo was in San Jose.

The Del Monte Cannery was once the biggest employer in the city.

The Santa Clara Valley was once called the "Valley of Hearts Delight" because of the smell of ripening fruit in the orchards. The orchards no longer exist due to urban sprawl.
