Exploring Museums in Shanghai, China

China is a country with a history as big as the land outside; a land of many different ethnicities, it has a rich cultural heritage, each making its own mark on this wonderful country. It is a land full of temples, pagodas, palaces, fabulous restaurants and parks that will take your breath away with their beauty.

Shanghai is one of the most popular worldwide destinations. Millions of Westerners travel here for both business and pleasure. It has managed to grow from a tiny village to the magnificent and wealthy city it is today.

Known to many as the Whore of the Orient or the Paris of the East, Shanghai is a city full of dazzling bright lights and a long history, which has been a little shady at times.
In Shanghai, once you have visited the pagodas, the temples and sampled the wonderful cuisine, what else can you see and do here? Why, visit one or more of the many museums!

SHANGHAI MUSEUM (Shanghai Bowuguan):

This is one of the best museums in China; outside of Beijing, most of the provincial museums leave a lot to be desired, but not this one. The artefacts here are captivating in their beauty and fascination and will take you right through China’s long history. You will need an entire day here.

The museum was designed to resemble a ding vessel, and you will find the artefacts varied and simply wonderful. In the Ancient Chinese Bronze Gallery you can admire some of the ancient green patinas; in the Zande Lou Gallery there are some exquisite ceramics to gaze upon; the Chinese Sculpture Gallery is a solemn and beautiful place dedicate to statuary. There are so many different galleries containing many beautiful objects here it is impossible to do them justice.

SHANGHAI ART MUSEUM (Shanghai Meishuguan):

This is the best art museum in the city, three floors of beautiful art works from different periods of Chinese history.

SHANGHAI MUNICIPAL HISTORY MUSEUM (Shanghai Chengshi Lishi Fazhan Chenlieguan):

Located within the base of the Oriental Pearl Tower, this modern museum is dedicated to the history of Shanghai, using creative and fun displays and presentations. You can trace its history from a tiny village to the magnificent city it is today and how it managed to be one of the richest cities. You can see life-sized modals of traditional shops with waxworks as well as one of the bronze lions that used to guard the entrance to the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank.
