Exploring Museums in Beijing, China

Beijing is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and the number one in China itself. Known also as Peking, Beijing was host to the 2008 Olympics and the symbol of a nation transforming itself after turbulent times.

Beijing is a city of many delights, both culinary and cultural attractions. The Forbidden City, the Summer Pace and the Great Wall are three of the top ten attractions in Beijing that attracts millions of international and national tourists every year.

But once you have done these, where else can you get that sense of history both China and Beijing is famous for? Why, at museums of course! Here is a list of museums that you should not miss out on when visiting this beautiful city.

IMPERIAL CITY MUSEUM (Huang Cheng Yishuguan):

This wonderful museum is dedicated to the history of the Imperial City Wall which no longer exists except for a few short sections. It is the pride and joy of the Imperial City wall, located to the southeast of the Forbidden City, and was re-opened as a beautiful park complete with marble bridges, rock features, streams and beautiful foliage.

CHINA NATIONAL MUSEUM (Zhonggo Guojia Bowuguan):

Located on the east side of Tiananmen Square, this museum is housed within a grim looking building but showcases some incredible ancient bronzes and ceramics spanning the different dynasties.


Like all natural history museums, this museum is home to a vast array of bugs and creepy-crawlies. The entrance is hung with the pictures of the greatest natural historians, including Darwin. If you have kids, take them over to the Dinosaur hall where they can gaze in wonder at several dinosaurs that grace the hall. On the second floor, there is a wonderful aquarium as well.

SONGTANGZHAI MUSEUM (Songtangzhai Minjian Diaoke Bowuguan):

This is a small museum with a big character. Here you will find one of the few places in China where visitors can see traditional Chinese carvings assembled all together. There are Buddhist effigies, old drum stones, carved stone lions and ancient pillar bases.

POLY ART MUSEUM (Baoli Yishi Bowuguan):

There are some wonderful pieces of art is this modern museum spanning the different dynasties, including some beautiful Shang and Zhou dynasty bronzes, as well as Buddhist effigies from the Northern Wei and Tang dynasties.

CAPTIAL MUSEUM (Zhongguo Shoudu Bowuguan):

This modern museum showcases some extraordinary artefacts, including ancient bronzes, jade, calligraphy, paintings, Buddhist statues and ceramics.
