Traveling in California is easy just follow the roadsigns, as long as you stay on a paved road, I don't feel you can get really lost. Don't take the "local" short cuts.

Driving with Ease

When traveling in U.S.A., there are many ways you can get to the same place. By that I mean there are usually several different routes to use, so if one road is closed by construction you can take an alternate route. To find a different route get a road map or an Atlas, find where you are and where you want to go, look at the different routes you could take and pick one.

While driving in America it is really hard to get lost, there is great signage that tells you the highway you are on and signs telling you how far to the next town, then as you get near the town or city there are signs telling you about the services available. The signs are there and easy to read, they will tell you all the churches in town and where they are located, then there will be signs for the service clubs such as Rotary and Kiwanis, the motels and hotels will all have signs up, because they all want your business.

All Highways are Numbered
All the highways and roads are numbered, when they laid it out they decided the roads going north and south would have odd numbers and the ones going east and west were to have even numbers. That was partly so that you would know which direction you were going. Here is how they started; the coast highway in California is called Hwy #1. The one in the middle of the Sacramento, San Joaquin valleys is Interstate 5

The number actually depends on where it starts and ends, example: Highway I 84 starts in Salt Lake City, Utah and goes north through Idaho and ends in Portland, Oregon. But you say that’s an even number and it is supposed to go east and west, look at your map it started in Salt Lake ends in Portland, Oregon right on the Pacific Ocean which is about 600 miles West of where it started. But look at this Interstate 80 starts in San Francisco and ends in New York somewhere, now that’s East and West.

High way99 or the new name Interstate 5 starts in Seattle, Washington and goes all the way to San Diego California.

I am an American living in Canada, and yes driving in the states is made easier with good signs, I would say this is also true in Canada where Highway 1 goes from east to west.
